Careem inked a resource sharing agreement with Technical Education and
Vocational Training Authority (TEVTA), aiming to create job
opportunities for 100,000 unemployed youth in the transportation sector,
technology media platform TechJuice reported on Friday.
The
agreement was finalised on Thursday between TEVTA Chairperson Irfan
Qaiser Sheikh and Careem Networks Pakistan CEO Junaid Iqbal, following
which the process was formally initiated.
Under the
agreement, TEVTA will provide training and hands-on experience to
100,000 unemployed youth for over a span of three years.
TechJuice
reports training of the individuals will be carried out at TEVTA
institute and covers driving skills, road safety, and basic Arabic
language skills. Applicants above 21 years of age and holding a
secondary school certificate would be able to apply and a stipend will
also be provided during the training period.
Speaking on
the occasion, Careem Pakistan CEO Junaid Iqbal said: “Our organisation
will help successful graduates avail job opportunities at a salary
ranging from Rs22,000 to Rs25,000 per month.”
After the
training, drivers will be employed by Careem in Pakistan or in the Gulf
countries, where Careem already has a firm foothold. In the Gulf region,
about 85 per cent of Careem drivers are Pakistani.
Careem
was founded in 2012 in Dubai, with the simple mission to provide
convenient, reliable and comfortable transport services to customers. It
has since grown to cover 26 cities in the Middle East and North African
region (MENA) and Pakistan, where it is currently operational in
Karachi and Lahore.
Careem entered the Pakistani market last year, launching its services in Karachi, Lahore and later Islamabad.
The
cab hailing service, alongside its rival San-Francisco based Uber,
gained instant popularity among a Pakistani population that has quickly
adopted 3G and 4G technology.
